Geranium oil is floral & sweet with antioxidant & antibacterial qualities.
Geranium, sometimes referred to as Sweet scented Geranium, is an aromatic plant with a fragrance not dissimilar to roses.
The essential oil is floral and sweet with elements of honey and with a depth that hints at citrus undertones. It has antibacterial, antioxidant and antifungal properties, making it a functional and worthwhile addition to any alternative medicine cabinet.
Due to the similarity of the scent of Geranium to Rose Absolute, it is is sometimes used as a cheaper alternative to Rose oil in products and cosmetics. Geranium has its own unique set of properties despite its fragrances close resemblance to Rose oil.
It is used in aromatherapy for its ability to balance, calm and relax. It also has analgesic, antibacterial and antioxidant properties and can be used as an anti-inflammatory for the skin. The fragrance can also be utilised to uplift mood and for alleviating grief, stress and anxiety.
Where have I smelt Geranium before?
Geranium oil is used extensively in the perfume industry as a floral note. It is combined with Lavender, Neroli and Jasmine to form the heart note of Davidoff's Cool Water.
The heart note (or middle note) of a fragrance is what you will smell after the initial top note dissipates and it helps to mask the base notes which often may give off a less olfactory attractive initial impression.
If you have a bottle of Cool Water to hand see if you can detect Geranium as part of the heart of the scent.
You can improve your olfactory senses by using them more and by consciously thinking about the layers that make up a scent when you are inhaling them.
Over time and with practice you will become better at detecting the faint nuances that make up different fragrances.
