How to use Sweet Orange essential oil

What could be sweeter than the intense scent of concentrated oranges? Zesty and invigorating, pure Sweet Orange essential oil doesn’t only smell amazing, it’s also a little bottle of complimentary medicinal power. The essential oil is cold pressed from the rinds of the fruit, freshly squeezing the beautiful scent and health benefits into each bottle of essential oil.

Limonene is a key component of Orange essential oil. It is used commercially in cosmetics, fragrances and cleaning products.

Orange essential oil is used in aromatherapy for it’s antibacterial, antidepressant and anxiolytic (anxiety reduction) properties, and also as it is an immunostimulant  (able to stimulate the immune system). Orange oil also has natural insecticidal properties and has been shown to be disruptive to ants which can aid with minimising repeat ant infestations.

Orange is one of the more familiar essential oil fragrances and one that everybody recognises. It is an ingredient in many varieties of toilet water. Eau de Carmes also known as Carmelite Water is an example of how the Sweet Orange fragrance was used historically as a unisex perfume.

What is Sweet Orange essential oil used for?

If you have cut yourself and don’t have an antibacterial spray to hand, you can use Sweet Orange essential oil to clean the wound. The oil has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and is one of a few essential oils that can help clean a wound and help to minimise the risk of bacteria causing infection. Simply clean the area with water first, to make sure there is no debris in the cut, and then massage with Sweet Orange oil mixed in a carrier before applying a plaster to keep the area clean. This is a great, natural way of helping to heal small cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Sweet orange oil can be incorporated into your skincare routine to help you achieve a glowing complexion. The antibacterial and antiseptic qualities, along with Sweet Orange oils ability to reduce inflammation and reduce scarring make it an all rounder when used as a night time moisturiser.

Mix a few drops with a carrier oil such as Vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil has antioxidant properties which will work in conjunction with the orange oil to help achieve a youthful complexion. We recommend this as a night time moisturiser so that any photo toxicity from wearing orange oil in the sunshine is avoided.

For a quick mood lift put a few drops of a carrier oil, like Sweet Almond oil, onto your palm and then add a couple of drops of Sweet Orange essential oil to the carrier. Sweet orange essential oil recipes

Christmas diffuser blend
You can create a festive diffuser blend by combining Sweet Orange oil will Clove Leaf oil using 10 drops of Sweet Orange oil and 5 drops of Clove Leaf. To add another element to this blend and make it even more Christmassy add 3 drops of Frankincense essential oil.

Mood lifting blend
In a diffuser add 5 drops of Sweet Orange oil, 5 drops of Geranium and 5 drops of Neroli.

Sweet Orange oil exfoliating scrub
With a few household ingredients you can make a scrub to exfoliate and spruce up dull skin. With some sugar or salt, coconut oil and Sweet orange EO you can create a scrub which is perfect for softening dry patches. Combine half a cup of sugar with half a cup of warmed Coconut oil and 20 drops of orange oil, mix up and scrub away.

Sweet Orange essential oil is for external use only and should not be ingested without being prescribed by a qualified Dr or trained aromatherapist. Additionally seek medical advice before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The oil can cause photosensitivity so avoid use before going outside, especially in very bright sunshine. UV damage can happen even on cloudy days so use caution. Keep out of the reach of children.
