Caution - this scrub is so good you may decide to ditch your shop bought exfoliator.
If your skin is feeling dry, has rough patches or if you're about to apply a fake tan and realise you've run out of exfoliator, you can make a homemade body scrub with 3 household ingredients.
You will need:
- Sugar or salt
- Coconut oil
- An essential oil (we have used Sweet Orange)
Both sugar and salt will remove dead skin cells and leave skin feeling silky smooth, but If you're unsure which to use, here are some tips.
- A salt scrub will feel more abrasive than sugar
- If you would like to use the scrub on your face, choose sugar as it will be gentler on delicate skin
- Salt is rich in minerals which are good for skin health
- If your skin is very sensitive sugar would be a better choice.
Start by measuring out half a cup of salt or sugar.
Put the salt or sugar into a Tupperware bowl.
Gently warm 1 cup of coconut oil in a pan until it is melted (we used organic coconut oil) and then pour the coconut oil into the container with the salt.
Add at least 20 drops of essential oil and then stir to combine all the ingredients together.
The coconut oil scent might smell stronger than the essential oil (depending on which essential oil you have used). If you would prefer a stronger fragrance add some more drops of your essential oil.
Leave the mixture to cool at room temperature.
You can put it in the fridge, but if so, don’t leave it very long as it will go too hard and make it difficult to use.
Once the mixture has cooled, it’s time to start exfoliation!
Use the scrub in the shower and rub it all over your body paying more attention to dryer areas like elbows, knees and feet.
Rubbing the salt or sugar granules onto the skin will remove the top layer where dead skin cells have collected. The Sweet Orange oil will bring an additional glow to the skin.
The coconut oil is super moisturising, so much so that there is no need to use a moisturising cream after exfoliating with this deliciously home made, essential oil body scrub.
